It’s a livery, but not as we know it.

It seems that Boeing are trying to pull off a record for the most amount of special liveries introduced with the launch of a new aircraft.

ANA, United and now China Southern have introduced special liveries for their 787s. It’s also likely China Southern will be using their special livery on almost all their 787s.

With this in mind, I quickly doodled up these:

  1. They look amazing. But there is only one thing, the 787’s engine nacelle can’t be painted. They need to be white.

    • Yes, but also no. White or Boeing grey are recommended. It’s the same with the 747-8
You can paint them any colour if you want, you just loose something like .08% on fuel burn.

    • no. the nacelles can be of any number of colors … the issue is the maximum thickness the paint can be in order not to screw up the laminar flow of air over the nacelles during flight.

if you want color “X” on your plane’s nacelles (like BA blue) … as long as they can formulate the paint they will do so.

      • Indeed. BA is proof of that and I long predicted their cowlings will be blue. I was laughed off by those who thought they knew better.
I’ve learned much since my original comment. I even have a list of what colours have been developed to adhere to the strict laminar guidelines by Boeing.

  2. You are talented!

    • Thank you πŸ™‚

  3. He’s not THAT talented! πŸ™‚

    • Quiet you. No one asked for comments from the cheap seats. πŸ˜›

  4. Only like the ACN…but the tail remains the same yet it’s the thing they need to change the most.

    • The point of the special schemes is that it should maintain the standard tail. At least for mine. So as not to dilute the airline’s brand.

Personally, I love Air Canada’s livery. It’s bold and breaks away from the eurowhite fuselage plaguing this industry.

  5. The QANTAS livery looks amazing… if only they would actually buy 787s, and not give them all to JetStar…

    • Thank you πŸ™‚

      And, yes, agreed!

  6. Sorry for a comment 3 years late but i was googling for livery inspiration and when i saw this being a airplane enthusiast and a patriotic Australian I just wanted to express somehow how great that Qantas livery is! Qantas might be getting some 787s in 2017/18 and i would love to somehow suggest this livery as a special via a email contact. Alas i probably wont be able to however optimistic i may be.
    Cheers mate
